• The advertising for trail cameras always show the camera mounted to a tree. This is acceptable if the tree is in the 8 to 10 inch caliper.

• Winter mounting on smaller trees will work because after the leaves have fallen the wind will have little effect on the tree movement.

• During the time of full foliage the wind will move even larger trees to the extent the camera will trigger.

• The best solution to this is to build a camera stand that is pushed into the ground next to a tree. The camera stands are not affected by the wind and when placed next to a tree provides good concealment and a place to secure your camera from theft.
  

• Mounting height can be from 24 to 40 inches. When mounted low, small game like armadillos and squirrels will trigger the camera. These, will in most cases will be missed if the camera is mounted a little higher.

• With the IR flash cameras in movie mode, a flickering red glow is put off by the camera. This red glow will really spook a deer. To avoid spooking deer with the flickering red glow from the IR flash, place the camera above the animals eye level looking down and they will not spook.

Security:  I made a 7 ½ X ¾ X 1/8 inch bar (see picture) and drilled a hole in each end to slip a Python cable through and it appears that this will work just fine for most security situations:

A Word of caution to those new owners of the I-60 and I-40 and future owners of the M series. The strap loop on the right rear of the camera is positioned at the center of the 2 screws that hold the battery cover on. If mounted on a small tree where there is no support in this area and you tighten the strap too tight, you will see that the front of the battery cover lid will start to pull away and leave an opening that could cause a water leak. Do not over tighten the strap when mounting these cameras--go to this link

BURNING OUT STUMPS

I wonder if this 'recipe' will work

In the fall, bore a hole in the center of the stump about 18 inches deep and 1-1 1/2 inch diameter. Put in about 2 ounces salt-peter and fill the hole with water. Plug it up tight. In the spring, take out the plug. Pour in 8-10 ounces kerosene and ignite. The stump should smolder, but not blaze, to the extremities of the roots, leaving only ashes.

Long overdue update

1. Didn't shoot no deer
2. Stang didn't even shoot his gun
3. Thrash had some running shots--none too good
4. Hey, its been raining in January and February, and even a little in March, but Big D says the Almanac doesn't look promising for the next 2 months.
5. Operation Burn Underbrush '08 stymied by the rain
6. About time to start planting--now what?

However, there was some harvest.  Not edible though.

 

 

Now we wonder if there are hogs established.
